Hung Hennessy Hammock Review

The Hennessy Hammock is one of the top manufactured hammocks on the market. The benefit of purchasing the Hennessy Hammock is having all the key features included for your next camping trip. But having the additional features does come out a small price that is well worth it.

The Hennessy Hammock comes in a variety of options such as the ultralight, Explorer and Jungle models that provide Hennessy’s Velcro entry and traditional zipper closure. Included with the Hennessy Hammock is a polyester square rain-fly, ridge-line, no-see-um bug netting, polyester webbing and hammock.

Although the no-see-um bug net is not required in many locations such as Montana during our testing, it was extremely helpful and required in the northern woods of Minnesota. Hennessy hammocks does offer other rain flies that are hexagon shape to provide additional coverage.

One of the key feature benefits that makes Hennessy stand out from the competition is there asymmetrical design which enables the user to lay flatter. In most hammocks you sleep parallel with the ridge line and support suspension causing you to sleep in an arch. Although this curved position is a comfortable lounge position, it prevents people from sleeping on their sides and restricts your ability to move throughout the night. This is why the asymmetrical hammocks are preferred by most side sleepers when looking at hammock camping.

When sleeping in a hammock camping situation it is important to consider the lowest temperatures for your trip. Like most hammocks the Hennessy does not include insulation underneath the hammock, so in cold conditions you will lose a majority of your body heat from underneath the hammock. There are several simple solutions to combat the cold. Hennessy offers the Super Shelter which is a liner with a foam pad that helps insulate the underside of the hammocks. This can also be done by sewing or purchasing what is commonly called an under-quilt from other vendors. It will be important to note that the Hennessy hammocks asymmetrical design and bottom entry hammocks may cause some difficulty when looking for under quilts from other vendors. During our testing we made an under-quilt from a common design and used the Hennessy Super Shelter.

The recommendation by Hikers Review is to purchase large climbing carabiners and wrapped rings to hang your hammock. (For more information visit our review on rap rings.) By using the rap ring method to hang your hammock you will save yourself time not only setting up but removing knots and tear down in the morning.

Overall, I have been extremely satisfied with the Hennessy Hammock for hiking trips and solo camp adventures. The hammock allows you to set up camp virtually anywhere as long as you have two trees, if trees are not available the Hennessy Hammock can be pitched as a tent with a little creativity.
