PureGrit 2: By Brooks

The PureGrit 2’s by Brooks are some of the best trail running shoes tested at Hikers Review. The overall fit is found to be all around average for size and fit. In a lot of other comparable trail runners you will find a lot of extra room in the toe box or too narrow.

With a stylish design that is lightweight and durable it provides a high quality shoe at a reasonable price. To help keep the shoe lightweight, Brooks used a durable mesh material that provides a breathable but yet flexible toe box. The tread is designed with an aggressive multi-directional pattern to help prevent slipping on any trail surface.

When the PureGrit shoes were tested, they were used for approximately 40 miles of trail running on surfaces such as dirt, gravel, mulch and pavement. During the test run there was one minor hot-spot that developed on the back of the heel during the first 10 miles. But this was easily corrected by unlacing the shoe completely and adjusting the fit. With additional testing there were no sore areas for the remaining 30 miles.

In addition to run testing the shoes on the trail these shoes were used during weightlifting sessions that involved heavy leg lifting. Because of the stiff sole and secure fit of the shoes, they helped provide a stable footing during squats and cling lifts. Because of the additional testing, I believe the PureGrit could be used comfortably and safely for backpacking with additional pack weight. With a total shoe weight of 10 ounces, these would be a great option for light weight backpackers looking for a comfortable hiking shoe.

Overall the PureGrit 2 was wonderful shoes but due to their late model, they getting hard to obtain. PureGrit 2’s can be purchased at various retailers for around $50-100 and for the price are an extremely good buy for somebody looking for a pair of trail running shoes. The other alternative is the newer and upgraded version of the PureGrit 2, the PureGrit 3. The PureGrit 3 seemed to have a slightly more flexible sole and a more comfortable fit but the testing and verdict is still out.
